Dr. (Mrs.) A.A. Sherikar - Introduction

Dr. (Mrs.) AA Sherikar, born on 4th March 1949, has earned her B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree from the Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, studying at the Bombay Veterinary College, the oldest Veterinary College of free India, in 1975 ranking 3rd in her class securing a First Class with Distinction (CGPA 3.71, Percentage 85.65%). She earned her M.V.Sc. degree in Food Hygiene and Public Health in 1977 ranking 2nd in her class securing a First Class with Distinction (CGPA 3.84, Percentage 85.60). She earned her Ph.D. in Veterinary Microbiology in 1986 from the same university, working in the same college.

She started her career as Research Assistant in 1977 and went on to become Assistant Professor of Department of Microbiology in 1980. She was appointed as the Associate Professor in the same department in 1988 and finally, the Professor in 1994. She took over as the Head of the Department in 2000, the charge which she has held till date. Her dedication for research saw her teaching for over 30 years and guiding 21 students for the Masters degree and 3 students for their Ph.D.

She has earned research grants in 7 research projects as Principal Investigator totalling an amount of Rs. 64,64,121. As donations she has accrued an amount of Rs. 6,80,000 for her department. As revenue generation, Rs. 78,98,000. In a span of 12 years, she has earned a total of Rs. 1,50,42,121 for the Department of Microbiology, BVC and University. She has contributed chapters in 5 books apart from having published 56 research papers / scientific publications, 68 technical presentations and 35 popular articles in the course of her career. She is the proud recipient of 4 awards, the most recent being the ICAR's Punjabrao Deshmukh Woman Agricultural Scientist Award for biennium 2003-04 presented by Shri. Sharad Pawar for her significant contribution in the area of animal health, specially Disease Surveillance of Prion Detection (Click here for the full story / refer the News Page). She was nominated as Founder Fellow of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences, New Delhi. She is a life member of 9 Associations / Societies and has served in various selection committees of different organizations including 5 universities. She is a nominee of Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board for the same.

She is fortunate in getting able support not only from her teachers and colleagues but also from her better half, who is a veterinarian, teacher and researcher of international repute apart from being the Vice Chancellor of the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery University.
