Dr. A.T. Sherikar, previously the Professor and Head of the Department of Food Hygiene and Public Health, Bacteriology, Parasitology, Pathology and Radio Isotope Laboratory, Bombay Veterinary College took over as the First Vice-Chancellor of the newly created Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University [MAFSU] at Nagpur on 10th November
2000. He successfully led and built the virgin University over a period of 6 years, spanning 2 terms into a mature and widely respected institution. On 17th May, 2007, Dr. A.T. Sherikar retired, drawing to an end, this amazing and highly successful journey as the base architect of the MAFS University which grew under his leadership from 9 people in 2000 to over 1800 people in 2007. Dr. Sherikar, born on 25th April 1949, has earned his B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree from the Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, studying at the Bombay Veterinary College, the oldest Veterinary College of free India, in 1975 securing First Class. He earned his M.V.Sc. degree in Food Hygiene and Veterinary Public Health in 1977 and Ph.D. in the same subject in 1986 from the same university working in the same college.
He started his career as Research Assistant joining on 20th Dec. 1976 and became Assistant Professor in 1979. He was appointed as the Associate Professor in 1985 and Professor in 1990. He became the Head of the Department in 1996 from which position, he has assumed the charge as the first Vice Chancellor of the New University. His flare for teaching and research saw him teaching for over two decades and guiding 33 students for the Masters degree and four students doing their Ph.D.
He has earned research grants in five research projects as Principal Investigator totaling a whopping amount of Rs. 271.82 lakhs to his alma mater. He has published two books, two bulletins, and six compendia besides 58 research papers, 23 technical papers and 7 popular articles. He is the proud recipient of many awards. He has been elected as Fellow of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences and as Member of the institute of Standards Engineers. He has served as Chairman of many scientific sessions and member of national and state committees. He is a member of about a dozen Associations, Societies and has served in various selection committees of different organizations. His love for students made him to work as Hostel Monitor for 7 years from 1981 and Rector for a record 12 years from 1988. He has been a member of various Editorial Boards and Secretary of Bombay Veterinary College Alumni Association. His organizational abilities are well known and he has organized more than 10 national level short term and advanced training courses / national symposium / exhibition / farmers meet. He has to his credit 9 research technologies and innovations in his chosen field of Food Hygiene and Public Health.
He has tremendous responsibility to build the New University and we hope and trust that he would excel himself and leave no stone unturned in his endeavors to bring the New University to top National level and International level. He is fortunate in getting able support not only from all Veterinarians of the State and University but also from his better half, who is also a Veterinarian, teacher and researcher of repute.
