ACHEIVEMENTS
OF DR. A.T. SHERIKAR AS
FIRST
VICE-CHANCELLOR OF
MAHARASHTRA
ANIMAL AND FISHERY SCIENCES UNIVERSITY
Mandates
to Milestones...
As
provided in the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University
Act XVII of 1998, the Government of Maharashtra appointed Dr. A.T.
Sherikar as the first Vice Chancellor of the University.
Accordingly, the charge was assumed on 20th November 2000,
which was in effect the beginning of the official functioning of the
University.
Preamble
The
Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University has been
established as a separate University by carving out the animal
sciences (veterinary science, dairy technology and fisheries)
component from the existing four agricultural universities located in
the four regions namely, Konkan, Western Maharashtra, Vidarbha and
Marathwada of the state of Maharashtra. Though, these faculties were
constituent units of these four agricultural universities, it was
found by the state government that “the study and research in the
field of veterinary and animal sciences lagged behind a great deal”.
In this age of micro-specialization, the importance of teaching and
research in veterinary medical education and animal, fisheries and
dairy sciences education is required to be seen in the establishment
of the professional skill and performance of the veterinarians. The
dairy technologists and fishery scientists are necessary corollary
for the applied and practical usages and for transferring the
technology to rural farmers. The enhancement of skill would lead to
the establishment and strengthening of backward and forward linkages,
and ultimately promotion of export in animal products.
