Teaching, research and extension activities

Harnessing capable human resource and making available infrastructure facilities are crucial to strengthening and making animal sciences effective and efficient, research vital and vibrant and extension education visible. Towards this end, the first Vice Chancellor took important decisions, few of which can be summarized:

  • Modification of the procedure of selection of academic staff by incorporating provisions in the statutes.

  • Obtained Rs. 1.4 crores from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for purpose of human resource development and infrastructure initiatives.

  • Obtained Rs. 21.00 lakhs from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for e-connectivity of different colleges and Rs. 25.00 lakhs to the headquarters.

  • Encouraged the constituent colleges for holding education technology workshops.

  • Improvement in instructional livestock farm by infusing fund to the tune of Rs. 2.00 crores.

Academic activities:

  • Student excellence: During 2000-2003 around 60 students of this University have qualified for the prestigious Junior Fellowship of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (New Delhi). The students have now got themselves in prestigious institutes throughout the country.

  • New Technologies generated: MAFSU since its inception has focus on carrying out research in collaboration with diverse industries that must culminate in development of a usable technology to improve the livestock productivity. Following are some examples of achievements:

  • A New computer software ‘Herdman’: This software has been developed by the University in collaboration with a software company. It is the first such software available in the country. The software enables maintenance and analysis of life-time data of cows and buffaloes in a commercial set up. A distinct version of cooperative milk unions has also been developed, which is in regional languages. These software are now available commercially. With the help of software, crucial management decisions, inventory management, accounting, billing, feed formulation is possible. A number of dairy farms have started using this software.

  • Development of software "Equisam": The University has developed this software in collaboration with industry. It enables maintenance of database of horses and ponies maintained for raising hyperimmune serum. The software ensures compliance of animal welfare concerns and has been proving useful in producing quality product more efficiently.

Research and Extension activities :

An important mandate of the University is to act as a catalyst in facilitating development of livestock industry in the state. In compliance with the aspirations of the farmers, livestock owners, scientists and technologists, a number of conferences, seminars and workshops were conducted throughout the state under the aegis of the University and its constituent colleges. Besides, farmer’s rallies, training programs for umemployed youth and livestock owners were also organized. Some of the important programs conducted during last three years are documented below in the chronological order –

  • Department of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Maharashtra organized a one-day seminar on “Recent Advances in Veterinary Science” at Latur on 24th December 2000 for the benefit of field veterinarians wherein the University also participated. Hon. Shri. Vilasraoji Deshmukh, the then Chief Minister, released the souvenir in the presence of other dignitaries.

  • Tribal development through dairy”: A 15-ay training program for unemployed educated tribal youth from Melghat area was organized at College of Dairy Technology, Warud (Pusad). Tribal youths were trained for self-employment so that root cause of poverty and malnutrition in these areas could be addressed.

  • A workshop on “State Level Brucella Control Plan” was organized at Nagpur on 21-22 June 2001 for screening the dairy cattle population in the state. Seen in the photograph Dr. D.K.   • South Asian Regional Poultry Conference was co-hosted by Dr. B.V. Rao Institute of Poultry Management of India, during 24-26 September 2001 at Pune. Seen on the dias are Hon. Shri. Sharadraoji Pawar, Vice-Chairman, Crisis Management Group of Govt. of India and Smt. Anuradha Desai, President, World Poultry Science Association – India Branch and Chairperson, Venkateshwara Group, Pune. Dr. A.T. Sherikar presided over the function.

  • A workshop on “Blue Tongue Disease” was organized at the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Parbhani on 3rd November 2001 to educate farmers about early detection of disease outbreaks and the control measures to be adopted.   • Seminar on "Strategies for promoting livestock and dairy industry in backward rural areas of Maharashtra” was organized in collaboration with American Soybean Association, New Delhi and Poshak Feeds (India) Pvt. Ltd., Karnal at Nagpur Veterinary College on 18th and 19th November 2001.

  • The University organized extension education courses for farmers. The Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai, a constituent college of the University conducted following courses –

  • Swine farming - 12-13 October, 2001

  • Poultry farming - 3-5 December, 2001

  • Goat farming - 3-5 December, 2001

  • Milk products - 22-23 December, 2001

  • Poultry Scientists and Farmers Meet” was organized by the University in association with Venkateshwara Hatcheries Limited, Pune, between 8th and 9th January 2002 at Nagpur. The Meeting was inaugurated at the hands of Dr. Sushil Kumar, Assistant Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New-Delhi.

  • “Animal and Poultry Fortnight” was followed in Nagpur Veterinary College on 14th to 30th January 2002, at Nagpur.

  • Seminar on “Embryo Transfer Technology”, sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi was organized on 22-23 January 2002 at the University headquarters.

  • IX Annual Conference of Indian Association of Advancement in Veterinary Research and National Symposium on “Concepts in Sustainable Livestock Production and Health in New Millennium” and Indian Veterinary Congress was organized at Nagpur Veterinary College during 4-5th February, 2002. Dr. A.T. Sherikar was conferred with Fellowship at the hands of Dr. V.K. Taneja, Deputy Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

  • Continuing Education Program on “Application of Recent Trends in Veterinary Practice under Field Condition” was held at Post Graduate Institute, Akola during 4-9 March 2002.

  • “Crossbreed Animal Exhibition and Farmers Meet” was organized by Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University and Mahatma Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana, Dinkarnagar, Jamani at Anji (Modhi) on 17th March 2002.

  • A workshop on “Recent Advances in Production and Health in Goat” was held at Udgir, Dist. Latur in collaboration with Department of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Maharashtra between 9 to 10 March, 2002 to discuss latest trends in management, breeding and health of goats. A meeting of livestock owners was also organized on this occasion for mass awareness.

  • “Plan and Progress of the MAFSU” in “Ghar-Shivar” - Nagpur Doordarshan Marathi Programme broadcasted on 20th March 2002 at 6.10 p.m.

  • The University and Bombay Veterinary College organised Farmer’s Training Programs in collaboration with Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd., Mumbai at different places as

  • Training Programs on “Biotechnological Techniques” for the students of science colleges was conducted at Bombay Veterinary College during 21.3.2002 to 28.5.2003.

  • A Review Workshop for the World Bank funded National Agricultural Technology Project on "Quality Assurance and Monitoring of Foods from Livestock and Poultry" was held on 27th - 29th May 2002. The workshop was attended by the representatives of the World Bank and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.

  • First Animal Sciences Research Council Meeting of Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University was held at Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai during 15 to 16 June, 2002. The Meeting was attended by the University and college staff, officers from the development departments viz. Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, government dairies, milk co-operative federations and private entrepreneurs. All the constituent colleges of the University presented their completed, on-going and proposed research projects. After elaborate discussions, the recommendations were forwarded to the development departments and other implementing agencies.

  • The University participated in self employment rally and exhibition organized at Yeotmal on 12th July, 2002 by Amravati Revenue Department.

  • 5th National Youth Parliament Competition was organized on 28th August, 2002 at College of Dairy technology, Warud. The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

  • K.N.P. College of Veterinary Science, Shirval, a constituent college of the University organized “Animal Health Camp” at Pimpode Budruk, Tq. Koregaon, Dist. Satara on 24th September, 2002.

  • Kisan Melava” and Lecture-cum-Demonstration camp on “Clean Milk Production” was organised by the University in collaboration with Godrej Agrovet Ltd. and Rotary Club of Wai at Kenjal, Dist. Satara. The staff and students of K.N.P. College of Veterinary Science, Shirval participated in the camp.

  • A seminar on “Zoonoses : An emerging threat to the society” was organised by the University in collaboration with National Association for Welfare of Animals and Research (NAWAR) and Indian Medical Association, Nagpur Chapter on 4th October 2002.

  • The University observed “World Animal Day” and organized “Animal Health Camp” at Lakhapuri, Tq. Murtizapur Dist. Akola on 4th October 2002. The staff and students of Post Graduate Institute, Akola participated in the event.

  • The University, the Nagpur Veterinary College and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation jointly celebrated “World Animal Welfare Week” during 5-11 October, 2002. Shri. Manukumar Shrivastav, Commissioner, Nagpur Municipal Corporation along with other dignitaries on the dias.

  • 26th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Veterinary Surgery (ISVS) and National Symposium on “Recent advances in small animal surgery” was organized by the University and Bombay Veterinary College between 9-11 November, 2002 at Mumbai. The conference was inaugurated by Hon. Dr. Dashrathji Bhande, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra State. Dr. V.K. Taneja, Deputy Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research was the Guest of Honour.

  • The University also hosted the 17th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Veterinary Anatomists (IAVA) and National Symposium on “Recent advances in veterinary anatomy for increasing livestock productivity” held at Bombay Veterinary College during 14-16 November, 2002 at Mumbai.

  • Training programme in “Dairy and goat rearing” for educated unemployed youth for self-employment was organized by Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur for 6 days.

  • College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Parbhani organized “Gurakhi Sammelan” between 4 and 5 January, 2003 and livestock keepers were informed about the animal management, animal diseases and feeding of animals.

  • The staff and students of College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Udgir, Dist. Latur also participated in “Environment Awareness Activity” which was organized by the University in collaboration with BAIF, Pune. Rallies, street plays, debate, poster and essay competitions and tree plantation programs were undertaken.

  • A workshop on “Contribution of Veterinary Science in Wildlife Management” was conducted by the University in collaboration with Department of Wildlife Conservation, Govt. of Maharashtra during 13-14 March, 2003 at Nagpur.

  • Three day training programme on “Fishery for unemployed youths” was held at the University headquarters, Nagpur.

  • A workshop cum farmers meet on “Importance of Management and Nutrition in Quality Milk Production” was held at Nagpur on 11th May, 2003. During the event, the scientists/dairy officials underlined the need for implementation of managerial skills along with maintenance of milch cattle on value added nutrition for boosting the clean milk production from human safety point of view and also addressed to the scientific queries from the farmers.

  • Second Animal Sciences and Research Council Meeting was held at Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science, Shirval, Dist.-Satara between 6 to 7 June, 2003. Hon’ble Minister of State, Shri. Madanrao Pisal inaugurated the meeting. The scientists from the University and constituent colleges, private industry, co-operative milk federations and officials from the departments of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra participated in the deliberations. Recommendations were passed on to the development departments of the government. Discussions were also held on the future planning of the research projects to be taken up by the University scientists.

  • Second Annual Conference of Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists (IAVPHS) and National Symposium on “Challenges in emerging WTO scenario on milk, meat and poultry industry” was successfully organized during 20-22 September, 2003.

  • Expovet 2003” was also organized with livestock, poultry, aqua-world and industrial exhibition during the conference. The grand expo created lot of interest amongst rural and urban people on raring the livestock on scientific lines.

  • XIV National Congress and National Symposium on “Milestones in immunological research and control of animal and poultry parasitism in new millenium” was organized by the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University and Indian Association for Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology at Nagpur between 15th to 17th October, 2003.
