Dr. A.T. Sherikar - Personal
Born on 25th of April 1949 in the village Mangaon
of District Kolhapur, Maharashtra State, India to a farmer Tatoba
Sherikar (Father) and Haunsabai Sherikar (Mother), Dr. Sherikar is
presently the Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences
University.
Dr. Sherikar is the Eldest son of Mr. Tatoba Sherikar. He grew up in a family
that included his parents and three brothers Shripal Sherikar, Shantinath
Sherikar and Prakash Sherikar (in descending order of ages).
He was a brilliant student and was encouraged by his teachers (Especially Prin.
D.A. Patil, now Principal of Vivekanand College, Kolhapur), his Uncle Mr.
Bhopal Kanire of Ingli, relatives, neighbors, friends and well
wishers.
He got married at the age of 25 to an equally ambitious and dynamic woman,
Dr.
(Mrs.) Abhaya A. Sherikar, daughter of Late Dr. Maniram N. Vaidya
and Late Dr. (Mrs.) Parvati M. Vaidya, who were both Medical Doctors of
repute in Mumbai.
She was brought up in a family that comprised of her parents and brother Mr.
Shreekant M. Vaidya.
He Matriculated from A.P. Magdum High School, Mangaon.
He passed Inter-Science (now level 10+2) from Vivekanand College, Kolhapur. He
joined Bombay Veterinary College, the oldest Veterinary College in India, and
graduated with the degree of BVSc.&Ah.
A hard core workaholic, he took up the post of Research Assistant in the year
1976. He proceeded to continue his studies & attained his master's degree,
MVSc. He was awarded with the degree of Ph.D. for his work on Meat Speciation.
He recieved the ICAR Biannium award for his breakthrough accomplishment of the
extraction of Insulin from Buffalo Pancreas. He has been honored with many
prestigious awards ever since. He has presented his papers (and chaired various
sessions) at many National & International Conferences & Events. He
served as Professor of Dept. of Food Hygiene & Veterinary Public Health and
Head of the Departments of FHVPH, Microbiology etc. in Bombay Veterinary
College. Dr. (Mrs.) Sherikar has also followed a similar course of education and
was awarded the Degree of Ph.D. for her work on the Canine Parvo-Virus
(Microbiology) and is currently holding the post of the Professor of Dept. of
Microbiology and an additional charge of Head of the Departments of
Microbiology, Pathology etc. in Bombay Veterinary College.
Dr. Sherikar now lives in the city of Mumbai
(previously Bombay) along with his wife Dr. (Mrs.) Abhaya A. Sherikar and his
son Shekhar A. Sherikar.
On October 2000, Hon. Governor of Maharashtra, DR. P.C. ALEXANDER, duly
appointed him as the Vice Chancellor of the first Veterinary University of his
Native State, Maharashtra.
Dr. Sherikar is currently putting in his efforts for developing the virgin
university.
