Audio Players for Linux
<< Back to Applications
XMMS (X Multimedia System) is the most distributed and popular Linux audio player. Its user interface is modeled on the classic Winamp which makes it very easy to use even for those who have just crossed over to Linux. XMMSs functionality can be extended by the use of thousands of plugins for visualization, i/o, effects, etc. freely available on the Web. XMMS has skin support which enables you to change the way it looks. If you get tired of the skins that come with XMMS, you can also download a huge variety of freely available skins from different sources from all over the Web. XMMS is highly configurable and features highly detailed menus and options.
Merits:
- Plays most audio formats
- Easy to use
- Powerful playlist search
- Features plugin-assisted extensibility
- Great skin support - can also use Winamp 2.x skins
- Comes pre-installed with most Linux distributions
Demerits:
- Mp3 plugin does not come installed - but it can be easily downloaded and installed
- The widgets still bear a look similar to older GTK apps

Beep Media Player is very similar to XMMS. In fact it is built on XMMS codebase. It has most features of XMMS like plugin and skin support. All it lacs is a powerful playlist searching feature. A powerful external playlist searching program is available to bridge the gap, but it runs external to BMP and I found it to be pretty buggy (crashes often). It lack the detailed configurability of XMMS, but most ordinary users will not miss that. All in all, if you want an audio player that is powerful, easy to use and does not have too many configuration options, this one's for you.
Merits:
- Easy to install
- Easy to use and configure
- Plays many audio formats
- Plugin support
- Better looking GTK2 / Gnome widgets
- Great skin support - also uses XMMS and Winamp skins
- In most cases, it can use plugins and software made for XMMS
Demerits
- Not as configurable as XMMS
- Poor in-built playlist searching capability
