The Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an advanced image editing suite that has cutting-edge features that are suited for personal and professional use. It is surprisingly easy to start using despite the sheer number of components it has. It is so comprehensive that it is possible to compare it with with similar high-cost proprietary systems like Photoshop. Though it may not replace photoshop, it surely provides most of the functionality. This is a serious tool and is very effective in creating professional quality work. The Gimp is highly extensible, thanks to its plugin support. Heaps of plugins come pre-loaded with it and if you want you can download new plugins or even create your own (like in any open standard system). The above screenshot is shamelessly limited depiction of The Gimp but it can't be helped since The Gimp can't be shown in a single screen however wide or tall it may be.
Merits:
- Bleeding edge technology
- Excellent featureset
- Extensibile through plugins
- Comes pre-installed with most Linux distributions
Demerits:
- None that I could think of

KolorPaint is a clone of the MS Paint program. It is small and easy to use, especially for newcomers and children to learn the ropes with the mouse. But do not mistake its simplicity for low utility. It is very useful and down to the earth for many non-professionals who want to make a graphic quickly. Even professionals self-admittedly use such programs to develop the basic idea and to sketch their graphics before moving to a professional image manipulation program to add touches. Its just so convinient.
Merits:
- Provides an easy to learn painting program to everyone
- Comes in handy for doing a quick graphic
- Comes pre-installed with most Linux distributions which include KDE
Demerits
- None that I could think of.
