Firefox is a world renowned browser which is threatening to overtake Internet Explorer as the most popular browser. Apart from being a world class browser, it features extensive extensibility (plugins) and security features. It is probably the most configurable browser in the world. Most importantly, Firefox gives you full control of your browsing. It does not engage in discreet activities such as secretive statistics reporting, automatically communicating with mother company's servers without your knowledge and so on. As a result of it's refrainment from all unrequired and dangerous activities, it does not put the unrequired strain on your Internet connection (bandwidth costs money). It is almost impossible to put spyware or malware onto your system through Firefox provided you properly configure it. Since Firefox is an open source program you do not have to believe what they say - the sourcecode is out there for all to see. All its claims can be verified by whoever pleases to do so.
Merits:

- Support for client-side technologies like Flash and Java
- Comes pre-installed with most Linux distributions
Demerits:

- Starts up slow on older computers
